Afternoons in the city of David, located in the western region of Panama, are getting hotter, and those who decide to train at this time at La Basita Gymnasium are experiencing real hell.

While you’re there, you don’t have to put in much effort to break a sweat. Just a few seconds of gymnastic exercises are enough for the body to immediately start sweating, and boxer Teresa “La Polla” Almengor is a faithful witness of this.

In this room, 30-year-old Almengor was constantly preparing for the most vital fight of her life. On October 20 at the Las Vegas Theater in Madrid, Spain, Almengor will fight for the interim World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight (126-pound) world title against local fighter Jennifer Miranda.

The fight between Almengor (9-1-3, 4 KO) and undefeated Miranda (11-0, 1 KO) will be part of the Road to the World event.

Almengor talked about how excited she is about this great opportunity that has presented itself in her career.

“Thank God I got the chance to fight for the title. I feel good, I’m content for this fight and I’ve prepared well to give my all. I am a warrior and if God is for me, who is against me,” commented Almengor with obvious firmness.

SHE WANTS TO BE CROWNED TO HELP

Winning the world title is the dream of every competitor, and in the case of Almengorno it is an exception. She knows that achieving this can change many things for her and other people’s benefit.

“I know that a coronation would make my family and the people of Chiriqui (the province she comes from) very proud. I want to do it for my children, for my mother. I want to become world champion so that I can support many people who do not have the means. I want to win it and keep it for a long time,” she emphasized.

About Miranda (37), the Panamanian said she had some credentials.

“I analyzed her very little because she has few fights, but my coach (Carlos Núñez) will take care of the plan. He’ll tell me what to do (in the ring). I’m going to myself and I’m going to my hand,” Almengor emphasized.

ABOUT HIS BOXING CAREER

Almengor made her debut in professional fights in April 2018, drawing after 4 rounds with Karla Mendoza. They met again 4 months later and also drew.

Her only defeat came in October 2018 by unanimous decision in 4 rounds against compatriot Jehina Gallardo. She then added to her 9 straight wins before drawing to an 8 round draw in her last fight which took place in April 2023 against former world champion Laura Ledezma.

In Spain, Almengor will fight her first fight outside Panama, but that doesn’t seem to deter her intentions to become the third Panamanian woman to become a paid boxing world champion.

“This is the first time I will fight outside of Panama, but I will leave with the best preparation, ready for whatever comes and first, God, I will come back with this victory,” Almengor concluded.

Mikiah Kreps and Mayerlin Rivas will fight for the World Boxing Association (WBA) Fedelatin bantamweight title on Friday night at Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel in Niagara Falls, Up-to-date York.

The city native, who made his debut in 2020, is undefeated in eight professional appearances. Now she faces a very essential fight for her development, because she has a chance to win the regional champion title in her own home and she is motivated to do so.

However, it will not be an simple challenge for her, as her opponent will be the former Venezuelan world champion, Mayerlin Rivas. La “Monita” lost to Erika Cruz by a very tough decision last November, losing her super bantamweight world title.

Rivas will be moving down to bantamweight, a division she has also reigned supreme in the past, and she knows a victory will give her a chance to recover and gain a modern shot at a world title, which is her main goal in the miniature term.

Kreps has 8 wins, 3 of them by knockout, while Rivas has 17 wins, 5 losses, 3 draws and 11 knockouts.

The World Boxing Association (WBA) Women’s Championship Committee has released its official rankings for the month and has also announced September’s most outstanding boxer, Canadian Mary Spencer.

Spencer won the WBA interim super welterweight crown on September 5 against German Naomi Mannes in a fight held at the Casino de Montreal. The home fighter won by unanimous decision of 3 judges based on the scorecards 96-93 in a fight in which she fought difficult and managed to achieve a great victory.
