Comments: Jared Anderson is 1st 8 after a monotonous but clear victory over Ryad Merhy. If we started punishing people for being bored while winning, a lot of things would be different and it would be complex to get into the top ten.

Comments: One of the things I appreciate right now is that they don’t leave players sitting idle in the standings in a division they won’t compete in in the future. Both Davids, Benavidez and Morrell, are aiming for 175 pounds. They give this division a huge boost. They are both moving up the ranks because there isn’t really anything engaging for them to do at 168 pounds; I mean, they could fight each other, but the PBC doesn’t seem particularly interested in that, so add that to “I won’t get Canelo” and there won’t be anything engaging for them.

In some ways, you could say Canelo really cleared 168 because he didn’t fight Benavidez or Morrell. They’re gone! This also means that Canelo vs. Munguia is, in my opinion, a 1v2 fight. So when you really break it down, Canelo Is taking the best fight possible at 168! Slippery Saul has done it again!

So we have two players and a refresh of these rankings. This is how I feel about this division right now, without the top two guys moving on. I know it’s weird to judge Andrade after a gutsy but brutal defeat, but it was for Benavidez, who none of the other fighters, other than Canelo, probably would have fared better against this group. Andrade can’t compete with these guys? Of course he can.

Carlos Gongora is also out because while I like Gongora, his ranking is based on what, a semi-miraculous 12th round victory over Ali Akhmedov in delayed 2020? It’s mid-2024, guys. Since then, he is 3-2, following defeats to Lerrone Richards and Mbilli, with his best win coming against Chris Pearson. This is just part of the reshuffle. He could beat Berlanga. May not.

Diego Pacheco won a few weeks ago. It wasn’t his best performance, but it’s entirely possible he is he is growing out of this weight at the age of 23 – the man is 180 cm towering – or maybe he is just a bit bored with fighting guys at the same level as before. Or maybe he just had a bad night! Many things are truly possible.

The upcoming Bektemir Melikuziev won last weekend, it wasn’t very memorable either, apart from a nasty cut to the eyelid he suffered in a W technical decision.

Comments: Terence Crawford is reportedly leaving the division to fight Israil Madrimov at 154 pounds in August. I will say it again: there is no reason for anyone to occupy this position.

Come on down, “Boots”, you are the default number 1. 1 welterweight in the world! Ennis has just signed with Matchroom, so he too should be fighting soon.

This is just terrible now. This is the weakest and worst division in the history of this category for decades. I’m leaving 10th place free because in the next update Eimantas Stanionis should he will come back because he will finally be able to fight on May 4. And if Gabriel Maestre upsets Stanionis, it will be Maestra. Or who knows what Fabian Maidana might do against Barrios! Wow. It’s coming back.

Comments: All right. A LOT OF LAUGHTER.

Devin Haney lost to Ryan Garcia, and while I think it was close based on the final score, it wasn’t that close. In the second half of the fight, Garcia kicked Haney in the rump around the ring, even fighting with sets and points.

But what are you doing here? Haney gained weight, Garcia did not. I can’t keep Haney at No. 1. He’s 1 point away – and Matias looks like a scary matchup for him right now – but how far can he fall? Who has looked really impressive lately?

So we have another stupid mess that will soon be solved, one way or another. Let’s sum it up:

  • Ryan Garcia dropped out, he didn’t make 140 and he won’t even try again, he’ll make 147. Or 154. Or whatever. But it won’t be 140.
  • Paro got on the team because he was reliable and did what was asked of him. Martin participates because maybe he should have a W over Teofimo, but he basically refuses to do anything engaging between sharp performances in bigger fights. Taylor’s in because I’m thinking about Taylor and Regis Prograis, who’s also out. Without a doubt, Taylor didn’t look great in his last pair, but neither did Prograis. Taylor did better against Teofimo than Prograis did against Haney. I don’t know, man. Taylor scored an official victory over Prograis, even though it took place almost five years ago. This is the level we are descending to at the moment.
  • It pains me a little to leave Prograis while Gary Antuanne Russell sits here and does nothing but Possess Potential.

Brandun Lee signs a contract with Queensberry Promotions

American super lightweight Brandun Lee has signed with Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions.

The 25-year-old Lee (28-0, 23 KO) has not fought for 15 months. He first started making his mark on ShoBox cards and then became a regular on Premier Boxing Champions shows.

Most recently, he defeated Pedro Campa by 10-round decision. Lee had gained some momentum as an thrilling prospect but has seen it fade a bit and of course the long period of inactivity hasn’t helped that, but getting back vigorous will certainly facilitate.

It’s also a notable move because Warren’s company hasn’t looked much outside the UK for talent acquisition to date. The company also announced the signing of Nathan Lugo, a standout American amateur who turned professional in April as a super middleweight on Overtime Boxing.

It looks like Queensberry are looking to expand their talent signing map. It’s unclear whether this means Warren will look to promote in the United States – as Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn did – but it’s also a fresh time in boxing, with Saudis supporting cards purportedly promoted by Warren and/or Hearn.

This may simply indicate that Warren sees an opportunity to expand his lineup with more options on these cards, as well as his own in the UK. Lee is a promising fighter who can quickly become a contender in a currently unstable (and intriguing) division, Lugo is a viable prospect and these are good moves considering the talent.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum still admits he was not thrilled with the official results of the rematch between Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall, which saw Catterall take a unanimous decision on scores of 116-113, 117-111 and 117-111. Interview with Sky SportsArum claims he was personally involved in the fight and believes the score was too high in Catterall’s favor.

“Let me explain. I was in Leeds for that fight. I watched this fight closely. The fight could have ended in three ways: Catterall 7-5 [in rounds]7-5 Taylor, even 6-6,” Arum said Heavenly sports.

Arum continued by saying that the judges’ official ratings were unacceptable, although he refrained from making any accusations of corruption. With that in mind, he truly believes Taylor did no favors, which is what caused his post-fight reaction.

“I was really nervous because Taylor is my fighter, we promote him. But not necessarily because I thought he definitely won the fight. I just thought it did him a disservice that the scorecards were so broad. I was sitting next to Eddie Hearn, whose player was Catterall, and he scored a goal and it was a very, very close fight.”

In lithe of the result and the split between Taylor and Catterall after the two fights, Arum feels he naturally deserves a third fight, especially given the fan reaction to the event, but says he will have to see how it all really comes together point in this fight.

Comments: I don’t think I would pick Teofimo Lopez to beat Jack Catterall, Jose Ramirez or Alberto Puello right now, but he could do it. I also don’t know if he would do well against Subriel Matias. In fact, there are plenty of people who are closer to 50/50 on paper if you eliminate the ESPN hype and evaluate actual performances.

But he beat Steve Claggett, he beat him convincingly, he basically did what he needed to do other than being a “showman”, which is a witty bit of marketing because the man is not a particularly fun fighter to watch.

Teofimo is weird, but he wins fights, and no one has done better lately either. He has arguments for “no”. 1st place, at least you can create it, but you can also easily argue with him outside the top 5.

Bam is a fantastic juvenile fighter, a legitimate rising star in the P4P discussion and he continues to prove it.
